To inherit and promote the excellent traditional Chinese culture and enhance cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, the International Cooperation Office held a unique Dragon Boat Festival cultural experience activity in Room 103 of Student Apartment Building I on the afternoon of May 30. Guo Rongmei, Director of the International Cooperation Office, Wang Daibi, Deputy Secretary of the Party General Branch, life counselors, and more than 20 Chinese and foreign teachers and students representatives gathered together to experience the unique charm of Dragon Boat Festival customs.
At the beginning of the activity, Deputy Secretary Wang Daibi introduced the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, traditional customs such as making zongzi, dragon boat racing, hanging mugwort, and related poetry culture to the international students. The international students listened carefully, and the atmosphere at the scene was warm, showing their strong interest in traditional Chinese culture.
Ingredients such as glutinous rice, zongye (reed leaves), honey dates, and red beans were neatly arranged on the table. Under the patient guidance of the dormitory life counselors, the international students carefully learned the skills of folding zongye, filling fillings, and tying cotton threads. Although their techniques were unfamiliar and they were flustered at first, after repeated attempts, zongzi of various shapes gradually took shape. Red Dragon, an international student from Tajikistan, sighed, This is my first time making zongzi. Although the process was a bit difficult, I feel a special sense of accomplishment when I see the zongzi I made with my own hands! Each international student completed at least one zongzi, and the scene was filled with laughter.
In addition to making zongzi, teachers and students also experienced the folk customs of making salted duck eggs and colorful mesh bags together. Colorful silk threads shuttled between their fingers, and everyone exchanged weaving skills, putting the pickled salted duck eggs into the mesh bags they made by themselves. The colorful mesh bags with auspicious meanings are not only traditional decorations for the Dragon Boat Festival but also have become cultural souvenirs that international students love.
At the end of the activity, teachers and students cooked and tasted the zongzi and salted duck eggs they made by themselves. The soft glutinous rice wrapped in sweet honey dates, paired with the oily salted duck eggs, allowed the international students to further experience the cultural connotation of the Dragon Boat Festival from a taste perspective. Li Mei, an international student from Laos, said, The zongzi tastes 太棒了 (terrific)! This kind of activity where I can learn about culture while doing hands-on work makes me feel that Chinese traditional festivals are particularly warm.
This activity not only allowed international students to deeply understand the cultural connotation of the Dragon Boat Festival through an immersive experience of seeing, doing, and tasting, but also built a platform for interaction between teachers and students and the integration of Chinese and foreign cultures. In the future, the International Cooperation Office will continue to hold diverse cultural experience activities, encouraging international students to become disseminators of traditional Chinese culture and letting more international friends appreciate the charm of Chinese culture.
