Recently, in order to enhance international students' understanding of Chinese national traditional sports culture, OIC actively responded to the arrangement of the 22nd Athletic Games and the 16th Sports and Culture Festival of the College, and widely mobilised and organised international students to participate in the relevant activities, especially the experience of Chinese national sports culture and sports items.
Before the activity, the teachers of the ‘Cultural Experience’ class for international students carefully designed the lesson plan and drew up the detailed learning and visiting experience contents in combination with the traditional Chinese national sports programmes in the Games. The whole cultural experience activity was carried out in a combination of in-class teaching, on-site participation and observation. In the in-class teaching session, international students learnt about the historical origin of traditional Chinese sports such as Cuju, Polo and Whammy through the English and Chinese versions of the courseware; in the on-site visit session, international students were allowed to go deep into the field of competition, and familiarised themselves with the specific requirements of traditional Chinese sports competitions by participating in the entrance ceremony and observing the competitions. In the on-site participation session, the international students showed themselves in the pot-throwing event and felt the happiness and success brought by throwing; in the dry-land dragon boat event they went forward together and felt the power and passion of teamwork; in the observation and learning, the stirring sound of gongs and drums let the international students appreciate the charm of Chinese traditional musical instruments, and they waved the drumsticks and struck the resounding rhythms, which added to the enthusiastic atmosphere of the event.
The activity was welcomed by the international students, deepening their knowledge of Chinese traditional sports and showing their good sportsmanship.
OIC has always been committed to promoting and inheriting Chinese traditional culture in the education and teaching of international students. This traditional Chinese sports and cultural experience activity is a useful attempt made by the Office in this regard. In the future, OIC will continue to hold more colourful cultural activities to provide more opportunities and platforms for international students to learn more about Chinese culture, so that they can gain more knowledge and friendship on the land of China.
