Traditional dress is an important carrier of the long history and culture of the Chinese nation. In order to enhance international students' understanding of Chinese traditional dress culture, on 11 November, the Office of National Cooperation held a wonderful lecture and experience activity on Chinese dress culture for international students. All international students of the school's Classes 2023 and 2024 attended the activity, and some students of the National Studies Club of the Youth League Committee participated in the activity. The lecture and experience activities were jointly conducted by Professor He Tieyu of Qinhuai Open University and Guo Rongmei, director of the department of basic teaching (office of international cooperation and exchange).
Behind the beauty of the dress code is the underlying etiquette and culture. On the day of the event, Professor He analysed in detail the evolution and characteristics of Chinese dresses in different historical periods, from the deep coat and curved train of Qin and Han Dynasties, to the jacket and round-necked gown of Tang and Song Dynasties, to the horse-faced skirt and lapel shirt of Ming and Qing Dynasties, so that the international students could have a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the culture of Chinese dresses. Afterwards, Professor He took the cheongsam as an example and introduced the historical origin, characteristics, fabrics and patterns of the cheongsam from the initial Manchu dress, to the popular dresses in the Republican period, to the integration of modern fashion elements, stressing that the cheongsam, with its unique charisma, demonstrates the elegant temperament and unique flavour of the oriental women, and has become the jewel of the Chinese dress culture.
During the interactive session, teachers and international students put on hanboks and cheongsams to feel the charm of Chinese traditional costumes. They carefully examined their costumes, some marvelled at the ethereal and elegant Hanbok, while some were intoxicated by the gentle and graceful Cheongsam. They all said that this activity not only made them have a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese dress culture, but also deeply felt the profoundness of Chinese traditional culture.
The excellent traditional Chinese culture is our valuable wealth, and also an important ‘business card’ for civilisation exchange and mutual understanding. The Chinese dress culture lecture and experience activity aims to enhance international students' understanding and recognition of Chinese dress culture and promote the exchange and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures through the combination of lecture and experience. In the future, OIC will continue to hold more colourful cultural activities to provide more opportunities and platforms for international students to learn more about Chinese culture.
