Frost, the eighteenth of the twenty-four solar terms, is the last of the autumnal seasons. As we enter the frosty season, the late autumn scene becomes apparent, with cold air moving south more frequently. Frostfall does not mean frost, but rather a sudden drop in temperature and a large difference in temperature between day and night. On average, it is the time of year when the temperature difference between day and night is the greatest. It is a time for enjoying chrysanthemums, eating persimmons, climbing high and far, and taking tonic food.
In meteorology, the first frost in autumn is called early frost or chrysanthemum frost, as chrysanthemums are in full bloom at this time of year and it is a good time to enjoy them. The chrysanthemum was regarded by the ancients as a symbol of vitality. In many parts of China, chrysanthemum parties are held at this time of year, when the chrysanthemum is in full bloom, and chrysanthemums are enjoyed and drunk to show reverence and love for them.
In some parts of China, red persimmons are eaten at the time of frost, which, in the opinion of the locals, not only keeps the cold and warm, but also nourishes the muscles and bones. The old people of Quanzhou have a saying about eating persimmons in the frost season: eat ding persimmons in the frost season and you will not have a runny nose. In some places, the custom is explained by saying that persimmons should be eaten on the day of frost, otherwise the lips will be cracked throughout the winter.
