Slender West Lake, formerly known as Safeguard Lake, is located in the northwest suburbs of Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, with a total area of 2,000 mu, 700 mu of water area and 100 hectares of excursion area.
The original name of Slender West Lake is Safeguard Lake. During the Qianlong period, the poet Wang Gang from Qiantang (Hangzhou) came to Yangzhou and, after enjoying the beauty of the place, compared it with the West Lake in his hometown and wrote a poem about it. The poem describes the scenery and prosperity of the area around the Thin West Lake, and in the poet's eyes, Yangzhou is as prosperous as Hangzhou. By comparing it with the West Lake in Hangzhou, the poet believes that the name Thin West Lake is indeed figurative and apt. Later it was called the Thin West Lake.
It is a strip of landscape made up of a succession of city halls from the Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and always interacting with the Grand Canal as a source of water. During the Kang and Qian Dynasties of the Qing Dynasty, the basic pattern of Slender West Lake was already formed, and it was known as the best garden in the world. It is divided into 14 major attractions, including the Five Pavilions Bridge, the Twenty-four Bridges, the Lotus Pond and the Fishing Terrace.
Many events are held at the lake every year, such as the Lotus Festival, the Plum Blossom Exhibition, the Cymbidium Orchid Exhibition, the Chrysanthemum Festival and the Night Tour of the lake.
